Bright stars at Henley

Our new designs are now ready to be seen at Henley on 23-25 June at the Craft in Focus Show. We will have gifts for golfers, fish for anglers, anchors and compasses for sailors, life buoys for those in need and brilliant stars for decorations. These key rings were in great demand at Pewter Live in London in May and we are hoping for similar results this week.Star-turquoise-web

You may think that it is too early to start buying Christmas decorations but people who see our mistletoes and holly and ivy with their pretty bows find them irresistible. We now have something even better in the form of our long awaited snowflakes. They will soon be available from our website but, if you cannot wait for that, you had better come to Henley on Thames.

Our first Show of 2016

The Craft and Design Show at RHS Wisley on April 28 –May 2, gave us the chance to see how our new products would be received. The new pewter key rings and hanging decorations took off well and we will have to build up stocks before Pewter Live on May 24 in London.

Fortunately the moulds that we made to cast the pewter gifts for golfers, and for sailors, are working well and these key rings are useful additions to our range of themed pewter products suitable for men and women. The pewter trout for anglers had a good outing too.  Even though it is still Spring, the pewter mistletoes and other Christmas tree ornaments were as popular as ever despite the presence of our new Christmas star which was being presented in a blue ribbon version as well as the standard red, white and green.

Pictures of new lines will appear on the website as soon as I can find time for photography but this has lower priority than our current commissions, but it is a good excuse for the delaying of the Annual Accounts!  Watch this space.

So much to do, so little time

Lesley and I are spending more time at the drawing board and in the studio as we move from a period of booking Shows and ordering materials to the time of designing and making things for this year’s events.  We have plenty of pewter for casting and we will be making several new moulds this month as we try to build up stock.

Alison Harris and AD

Last month we were joined by Alison Harris from Brighton, shown here in our studio, as we provided a one-day course on “How to earn your living from your Craft”.  She won our prize at the Worshipful Company of Pewterers’ “Pewter Live” event last summer by her obvious design ability and technical skills, but she had no knowledge of the realities of  the professional Craft world.  Hopefully she is better prepared now and we will be watching her progress!

As it is April we are wrestling with the accounts for the end of the financial year.  It takes us away from the fun of working with pewter but, like the photography of new products, it is an essential part of the business.  There are loads of new designs that we want to produce by casting and by the repousse technique using pewter sheet, but time also has to be found for designing and making commissioned pieces. These often introduce us to new ideas about using pewter as we create the bespoke items.  One way or another, there will be little rest for us in April!

When you have been invited to enter someone’s house there is always the hope that you will be made to feel welcome and it is just as important with a website. So, here is the “Welcome” sign, in pewter, of course!

Welcome badge
It was made for Holy Trinity Church in Cookham as one of six to be worn by stewards who greet people into the building on Sundays. The simple design shows a clearly visible bit of text in a suitable font, supported by a representation of the cross that is carried in front of the priests as they process during the Services. Being in modern pewter it looks good against any fabric whether plain or patterned.

We always aim to evolve the design of a bespoke piece with the client so that it will be appropriate to the event that they wish to celebrate, ideally incorporating visual references as well as text. This aspect of partnership is important to us so that the customer feels the extra bit of involvement. Sometimes the commission is for a single piece but we are in a position to make limitless numbers of cast pewter items, usually for corporate clients or for social groupings.

You can guarantee that if you meet us at one of the Craft Shows listed on our Events page you will be given a warm welcome at our stand, even though we will not be wearing an actual “Welcome” badge!

Our garden studio in Cookham Dean

What better way to mark the opening of our new website than a picture of our garden studio in Cookham Dean, where we make the moulds and cast the pewter. You can also see the windows of the loft conversion where the office work is conducted but from where you get a most distracting view of the countryside!studio

This time of year is free of scheduled Craft Shows and so our days can combine working with pewter and the home maintenance tasks that are kept on hold during the months leading up to Christmas. Even so we are developing new designs and booking the Events for this year. The new leaflet has been put together and will be off to our local printer soon so that we can send one with every order that arrives. We buy 1000 at a time and change the contents two or three times a year to keep it current.

The best way to keep track of our appearances at Craft Shows during the year is to look at our Events page. If you would like to receive reminders of these opportunities then you can add your name and e-mail address to our mailing list. (We will not share it with anyone.)
